About this artwork

Lounge Painting 2 was originally part of a body of work entitled Written in the West and depicts a deserted hotel in the small town of Gila Bend in Arizona.

Peering into its lounge through a dirty window, Wenders was intrigued by the fabric of the coloured armchairs; their vibrant blues, yellows, pinks, reds and oranges seem to jostle in a semicircle. An air of theatricality surrounds the scene with the artist noting that: "You didn’t even feel that … [people] were missing, because it was as if the armchairs were talking to each other."
