About this artwork
Like a hot air balloon laid to rest, Imran Qureshi’s work Tarpaulin is mesmerising for its visual unevenness - the floor of the work takes on a translucence that resembles a small expanse of water, as much as a skin of plastic applied to a dry or damp rooftop. Much of the animation of Tarpaulin occurs to the left of the screen as the wind whips up the surface that has a small piece of discarded paper or plastic resting on it. We watch as the breeze bullies everything into a mild frenzy, confirming the life in lifeless spaces. An observation of the poetic in the mundane, Tarpaulin draws attention to how Qureshi sees everything as a detail in a larger landscape.
