About this artwork
In Violet Cathedral Rose the colour spectrum shifts towards twilight: violet and indigo traditionally mark the threshold between day and night, visibility and mystery. The work can be read as an inner window rather than an external one – a diagram of attention turning inward. Its slow pulsation recalls both the circulation of blood and the rotation of celestial bodies. By holding these scales together, the piece hints at a quiet correspondence between the intimate and the cosmic, suggesting that contemplation of a simple moving pattern can open onto a larger, spiritual dimension. In Violet Cathedral Rose, the architecture of the gothic rose window becomes an electronic flower of light. From a luminous central core, shards of violet, indigo and silver radiate outward, forming a crystalline mandala that continuously breathes, pulses and recomposes itself.
The animation is generated in real time by a custom code-based engine developed by Philippe Ceulemans. Rather than relying on AI, the work is built from explicit mathematical transformations of pixels and color fields, giving it a precise, crafted character.
The piece is designed as a contemplative loop for large and small screens alike. Its slow motion and deep blacks create the impression of a stained-glass window suspended in darkness – a digital relic that glows quietly in domestic and public spaces.
