This painting, though a finished work in its own right, is a preparatory piece for 2 different series of sculptures—one of tin-glazed terracotta, the other of etched copper plate. The winged face with insular gaze, from a stone figure on the grounds of Versailles, is a recurring image in her work. Language and reverse writing appear frequently in her compositions.
